I just got a voicemail from a "Law Offices of Michael A. Lotta, Inc." and I'm trying to figure out if this is a legitimate debt collection call or something else. They didn't leave many details, just a callback number and a reference number.



I looked them up and found an address in Santa Ana, CA, and another in Massachusetts. Has anyone else dealt with this firm? I'm not even sure what debt this could be about, and I'm hesitant to call back without knowing more.



If this is a real collection attempt, I want to make sure I handle it the right way. I've read that you should always demand proof of the debt in writing before discussing anything over the phone and to never admit to owing anything until you see documentation.



Is it true they have to send a validation letter? Also, what happens if the debt is really old? I'm in MA, and I'm worried about the statute of limitations. I definitely don't want to restart the clock on an old debt by accident.



Mainly, I want to know if this firm is legit and what my first step should be. Should I just send a debt validation letter and wait? Any advice from people who have been through this would be really helpful. Thanks!
